Even a global pandemic can’t stop Sutter O’Connell from giving back to the legal community and supporting the next generation of trial lawyers. Teaming up with the University of Akron School of Law, Sutter O’Connell partners Jim Popson and Dan Bray recently led the way as sponsors for the school’s trial competition team at an event held at TopGolf in Independence, Ohio. Joined by several alumni of the trial team program, funds were raised to support the program’s participation in the nation’s most exclusive and competitive trial tournaments.
Under the guidance of Sutter O’Connell Shareholder Kevin Kita, and many past students of the late Managing Partner, Larry Sutter, the University of Akron trial team has seen an string of success that is unparalleled by any other Ohio law school, and produces amongst the most trial-ready law students in the country. In just the last three years, the team took first place in the 2020 National Online Trial Advocacy Competition; first place in the 2020 Ohio Attorney General Mock Trial Competition; and placed as National runner-up three consecutive semesters in 2018 American Association for Justice Student Trial Advocacy Competition (AAJ STAC); 2019 NBTA Tournament of Champions; and 2019 AAJ STAC, respectively. The side-effect of this string of victories has been a growing need for additional funding to ensure the ability to participate and compete in all of the national competitions to which the team gets invited. It’s a need with which Sutter O’Connell is more than happy to assist.
