Derek Hartman has over five years’ experience representing the interests of individuals, small businesses, and Fortune 500 companies both in and out of the courtroom. Prior to joining Sutter O’Connell, Derek owned and operated the law firm of Hartman & James LLP where he was personally responsible for managing the firms’ day-to-day operations. While at Hartman & James LLP, Derek focused his areas of practice on residential and commercial real estate, business formation and governance, and civil litigation. Prior to forming Hartman & James LLP, Derek served as local corporate counsel to one of the largest midstream companies in North America where he was responsible for assessing risk, conducting due diligence, and managing outside counsel throughout litigation.

Derek is actively involved with the Akron Bar Association and the Ohio State Bar Association. In July 2016, Derek was appointed to the Ohio State Bar Association’s Futures Commission where he has been tasked with discussing, drafting, and proposing changes to the Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct, which are the ethical rules which govern attorney conduct. He also serves as co-communication director for the Real Property Section of the Akron Bar Association.

In his free time, Derek enjoys golfing and watching any Cleveland sports team.
