In separate incidents, Orange County Superior Court Judge Scott Steiner and Kern County Superior Court Judge Cory Woodward both received sanctions for having sexual relations in their respective chambers during business hours. Their conduct was described as “irresponsible” and noted as being “improper” by the Commission on Judicial Performance.
Judge Steiner had relations with two different women in his chambers. The first was a former intern and the second a practicing attorney. There were allegations both felt Judge Steiner could help them obtain positions with the county.
Judge Woodward apparently had an affair with a married woman who worked as his clerk. Her husband called her superior and the ruse was up. However, the judge fought “tooth and nail to keep his clerk assigned to him because they were in the throes of an affair”.
Despite the breach of public trust, both jurists will keep their jobs and no further sanctions are forthcoming.
