On May 18, 2018 Sutter O’Connell shareholder Denise Dickerson participated in a medical-legal simulation at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine held in Indianapolis. Denise prepared and defended a doctor in a live mock deposition which was presented to a diverse group of medical students, residents, physicians and academics. Following an extensive question and answer session, pointers were shared with the audience about how to participate in preparing their own legal defenses, what a deposition is and is not designed to accomplish, and how to avoid common pitfalls in the deposition process. Defending medical malpractice claims has become all-too-familiar for today’s and tomorrow’s medical professionals, and in this environment, being familiar with the process goes a long way toward developing an effective defense to a lawsuit.
